Two of our DMS Esports Teams qualified for the end of season playoffs in the MSEL National Esports League. The 8th grade team ended their season ranked 51st with the 6th grade finishing 60th out of 326 teams. We are proud to say both squads made it to the "Sweet 16" before being knocked out. Thank you Coach Tidey for a great run!

Recently, the DMS Counseling & Support Team provided mini lessons to all students on brain growth. Students learned about neuroplasticity (the brain's ability to be molded or changed) and how we can strengthen positive habits such as study skills, focus, and even compassion! Students participated in a hands-on activity where they molded a brain out of playdough while they learned about these scientific concepts. Lastly, students learned an exercise for training our brains to be more compassionate by practicing a mindfulness activity.

Every week we emphasize a specific behavior that relates to our H.E.R.O.E.S. expectations. Each letter represents something we want our students to exhibit at school: H=Helpful, E=Engaged, R=Respectful, O=Ownership, E=Empathy, S=Safe. This week our focus was being respectful and kind to others. Students wrote about how they demonstrated these behaviors on post it notes and submitted them to our H.E.R.O.E.S. BOX. Several responses were drawn by staff and read to the rest of the student body. The students whose names were drawn earned a 10 pt. extra credit slip as well as a cup of hot chocolate. It was a perfect way to end a very snowy week! Great job CHIEFTAINS!!

Recently 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Chieftain Heart students are serious about spreading kindness and positivity at DMS in celebration of National Kindness Week! Students created sticky notes with positive messages and placed them on other student lockers. This week Chieftain Heart student volunteers will also be creating short video clips with facts about kindness for all DMS students to view in their classes. Finally, the club will be sponsoring a "Kindness Candy Gram" event this week where students can purchase and send a special candy gram message to a friend. Keep it up CHIEFTAINS!

The DMS Honors Club held "Socktober" for the last two weeks of October. "Socktober" is an event where people in the community donate a pair of socks to help make a big difference in the lives of those who are in need. Teachers and students at DMS donated over 900 pairs of socks in the last 2 weeks of October to give to a local organization. The class that donated the most was Mr. Buynar's 1st-hour, coming in second was Mr. J. Turner's 1st-hour class. Congratulations on a job well done!!
