On behalf of the staff at Dowagiac Middle School, we would like to congratulate Angel B. and his family for being selected as our October 2022 Student of the Month! He was selected for his great attitude, work ethic and citizenship.

Recently, the DMS Counseling & Support Team provided mini lessons to all students on brain growth. Students learned about neuroplasticity (the brain's ability to be molded or changed) and how we can strengthen positive habits such as study skills, focus, and even compassion! Students participated in a hands-on activity where they molded a brain out of playdough while they learned about these scientific concepts. Lastly, students learned an exercise for training our brains to be more compassionate by practicing a mindfulness activity.

Every week we emphasize a specific behavior that relates to our H.E.R.O.E.S. expectations. Each letter represents something we want our students to exhibit at school: H=Helpful, E=Engaged, R=Respectful, O=Ownership, E=Empathy, S=Safe. This week our focus was being respectful and kind to others. Students wrote about how they demonstrated these behaviors on post it notes and submitted them to our H.E.R.O.E.S. BOX. Several responses were drawn by staff and read to the rest of the student body. The students whose names were drawn earned a 10 pt. extra credit slip as well as a cup of hot chocolate. It was a perfect way to end a very snowy week! Great job CHIEFTAINS!!

This week Chieftain Heart student volunteers will also be creating short video clips with facts about kindness for all DMS students to view in their classes. Finally, the club will be sponsoring a "Kindness Candy Gram" event this week where students can purchase and send a special candy gram message to a friend. Keep it up CHIEFTAINS!

The DMS Honors Club held "Socktober" for the last two weeks of October. "Socktober" is an event where people in the community donate a pair of socks to help make a big difference in the lives of those who are in need. Teachers and students at DMS donated over 900 pairs of socks in the last 2 weeks of October to give to a local organization. The class that donated the most was Mr. Buynar's 1st-hour, coming in second was Mr. J. Turner's 1st-hour class. Congratulations on a job well done!!

DMS Halloween Dance

On Tuesday, October 25th DMS 8th graders participated in a "Career Day Expo" at the Kalamazoo Expo Center. Students were able to visit/explore various booths that shared information about multiple careers. All booths were interactive and hands on. After the event, multiple students stated that they learned of new careers that they might be interested in exploring. It was a great day!

We would like to congratulate 8th grade student athlete Maverick B. for being selected as our September Student of the Month. Maverick was chosen by the DMS staff because he has demonstrated positive habits in the classroom as well as how he treats others! Thank you for being one of our H.E.R.O.E.S.!

DMS Students have Chieftain Heart!
Twice a month, DMS students have an opportunity to sign up to participate in a Chieftain Heart lunch activity. Chieftain Heart at DMS is all about spreading positivity and school spirit. At the last DMS Chieftain Heart activity, over 60 students (6th-8th), brainstormed ideas for future Chieftain Heart activities and then participated in a "Sidewalk ART" activity where they draw and wrote positive and uplifting messages for all DMS students and staff to see. Thanks for spreading the POSITIVITY students!

DMS CHIEFTAINS serving our community! Mrs. Marrs and her DMS Honors Club are sponsoring a "Socktober" Sock Drive through the rest of the month. The purpose of this project is to help needy families stay warm during the winter months.
